Valentine’s Day Votive Holders

Just because you’re all grown up doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy glitter and glue!  Join us to try your hand at making a set of these adorable votive holders with a Vaelentine’s Day theme.  We’ll show you how to use a little Modge Podge, tissue paper, and imagination to create beautiful decorations that are as unique as you are!  All materials will be provided, but please register to ensure adequate supplies.

G.P.S.: Navigating Life’s Transitions

The staff from the Aging Institute returns to Moon Library to help us find our G.P.S — goals, passion, and support — to navigate life’s unexpected twists and turns.  Whether you’re facing a new career, the end of a relationship, an unexpected illness, caring for a family member, or anything else, having a road map to follow and knowing where to turn for support and guidance can help.  Join us as experts help us to find just that.  This program is free but registration is mandatory.

Senior Citizen Computer Classes

Offered Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Evening in January

Moon Area High School senior Ibraheem Hafeez will be at the library every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening in January to offer free one-on-one computer classes to interested senior citizens free of charge.  Ibraheem will help you navigate th Internet, teach you computer basics, help you work with your email, or anything else that you might want to do.  Learn how to use the technology available to you from someone who knows it best… a teenager!  Classes begin at 6:00 PM and can be completed in 30 min or 1 hour blocks of time (i.e. 6-6:30 or 6-7) and you are welcome to come once or as often as you like.  All computer equipment will be supplied by the library.  Please call the library to sign up at 412-269-0334.  Don’t let this opportunity pass you by, get started now.

November 29th and December 14th, 6-8 PM

Let us help with all the holiday hussle and bussle by bringing your gifts here to be wrapped for FREE!  Area teens will be stationed in the library to wrap your presents while you browse books or go run errands.  All you need to do is tag your gifts appropriately and we’ll do the rest.  Donations will be accepted but are not neccessary.  Please fee free to call the library for more information.

December 11, 2011- Annual Holiday Open House

Moon Library’s annual Holiday Open House will be an extra-special affair this year with a whole schedule of fun family events.  We’ll provide the entertainment, just don’t forget to bring the camera.  List of events and times is below:

• 1-2 PM: Stories and Songs with Holiday Characters
• 2-3 PM: Cookies, Cocoa, and a Visit from Santa
• 3-5 PM: Family Holiday Movie and Snacks

Free Holiday Gift Wrapping: November 29th and December 14th, 6-8 PM

Local teens will be on hand to ease your stress and help you wrap those mountains of gifts that are waiting for you.  Just throw your items in a bag with your last name, let us know what names to put on the gift tags, and go browse the library or grab a cup of coffee as the library does the rest.  All wrapping paper, bows, ribbons, and name tags will be provided.  Donations will be accepted, but are not neccessary.  Call the library at 412-269-0334 for more information.

FREE Holiday Babysitting: December 8th, 6-8 PM

Need to finish up some last minute shopping without the kids?  Moon Library can help!  Area teens trained by the American Red Cross or Children’s Hospital will be here to offer free babysitting to interested patrons.  The babysitters will treat your kids to a special holiday movie, crafts, snacks, and stories, and you’ll get the chance to finish up those errands that need attention.  This program is limited to 10 participants and spots are filling up fast, so don’t forget to register by calling the library at 412-269-0334  or logging onto our website at www.moonlibrar.org.  Contact Heather Panella, Public Services Librarian, for more information. 

Holiday Cookie Walk: December 11th, 1-5 PM

Moon Library will be holding its first-ever holiday cookie walk on December 11th, and you’re invited!  All day, the library will be filled with tables of tasty homemade treats that you can box up and take home to hungry holiday guests.  For $10 you can purchase a cookie box from the library’s Circulation Desk on the day of the walk that will hold a few dozen cookies.  What you put in the box is up to you!  Contact Heather Panella or Suzy Ruskin at 412-269-0334 for more information.

Alone at Home

This class will help you determine when it’s the right time to trust the kids to stay home alone.  Instructors will cover the topics of physical and emotional readiness, appropriate behaviors, and the creation of a family safety plan for children when parents are out.  Children ages 10 and up are welcome to accompany their parents to this presentation.  This program requires registration.

Learn About Hodgkins Lymphoma

Hodgkins Lymphoma is a form of cancer that attacks the blood and lymphatic tissue and strikes people in their 20′s or 30′s as well as those in their late 60′s.  Those diagnosed with this disease have a high chance of survival, especially if diagnosed early.  This presentation given by UPMC Cancer Centers will provide of the cancer, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.  And, any cancer survivor and/or their family members will be interested in the valuable discussion of patient and family resources for dealing with Hodgkins Lymphoma and other cancers.

The instructor for this course is Donna Murray. Donna Murray is an expert in the field of genealogy. She is a regular contributor to Family Chronicle Magazine, Internet Genealogy and Discovering Family History and wrote a weekly genealogy column for the St. Petersburg Times for more than five years. She has taught genealogy classes at Eckerd College, Hillsborough Community College and St. Petersburg College in Florida and has presented seminars at numerous genealogy societies in that state. A Pennsylvania native, Murray has more than 20 years of experience as a genealogy researcher and has conducted research in many states, primarily in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Maryland. She is a former newspaper reporter and a feature writer and served as the Director of Marketing and Creative Services for Hillsborough Community College for 20 years.
